Kenyan Artist Ndegz has more than just lyrics on his new EP, Mr Bull. He recently joined Mdundo's Muriuki Kiai on Instagram Live and gave us the tea.
Ndegz was born in Mombasa and later relocated to Nairobi. His stage name, Ndegz, is derived from his given name, Ndegwa, which means "The Bull" in Kikuyu. Additionally, "El Toro," meaning "The Bull" in Spanish, adds to his stage name, making it Ndegz El Toro. He described his EP as a passion project and wanted it to be a compilation of his music that truly encompasses who he is.
Growing up, Ndegz played the trombone and the brass and even joined a band and participated in the choir. During his teenage years, his father connected with Simon Wainaina, Eric Wainaina's brother, which led to him working in Eric Wainaina's studio. With his background in playing instruments, Ndegz found a niche in music production, where he worked with prominent artists such as Tim Rumbui, Chris Adwar, and Atemi.
His music has been influenced by listening to RnB and hip-hop artists like Craig David, Usher, Michael Jackson, and Boyz II Men. Ndegz decided to pursue a music career seriously after taking a gap year.
Ndegz shared that "Your Love Is Like," featuring Prezzo, was not originally a collaboration. Prezzo heard the song and decided to jump onto it, adding a bridge and a verse. Ndegz described Prezzo as humble and appreciative of his contribution to the track.
