Johannesburg, South Africa – September 2025

Amid paying out $1 million in royalties between January and July 2025 to more than 300,000 artists across Africa, Mdundo.com has announced a strategic partnership with Women in Music South Africa (WIMSA), the local chapter of the global non-profit Women in Music. The collaboration is designed to advance visibility, representation, and career opportunities for women across the South African music industry.

Founded in 2020, Women in Music South Africa is part of the global Women in Music network established in 1985. WIMSA is dedicated to advancing equality, diversity, heritage, opportunities, and cultural representation for women in the music industry. Through mentorship, networking, education, and community-building, the organization works to empower female artists, producers, executives, and other professionals across the music value chain.

“As Women in Music South Africa, we are delighted to partner with Mdundo,” said Manaileng, Chairperson of WIMSA. “This collaboration represents a powerful step towards amplifying women’s voices, creating meaningful opportunities for greater representation, and building a more inclusive future for African, particularly South African, women in music.”

Mdundo CEO Martin Nielsen added: “Our mission has always been to make music accessible while creating real value for the artists. Partnering with Women in Music South Africa ensures that women in the industry gain more visibility and professional opportunities. Together, we aim to build a more inclusive and representative African music ecosystem.”

The agreement includes joint campaigns, talent development, Masterclasses and artist spotlights. Both organizations will also engage in co-branded social campaigns, newsletters, and event marketing to broaden the impact of the partnership.

Mdundo.com, Africa’s leading music distribution platform, continues to cement its place at the heart of the continent’s creative economy. Artists from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, Mozambique, and beyond benefited from the latest royalty payout. With more than 39 million monthly active users, Mdundo continues to expand its footprint in Southern Africa and Cameroon, broadening its reach and boosting earning potential for local musicians.

The platform’s growth is powered by strong partnerships with Africa’s top telcos — Safaricom, Airtel, MTN, Glo, and Vodacom — and leading regional and global brands including Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL), Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), NCBA Bank, Samsung, Airtel, Safaricom, and DKT. Payment partners like Cellulant ensure seamless artist payouts across the continent.

Mdundo’s strategy is anchored on hyperlocal content and licensing deals with influential music companies such as EmPawa Africa, Chocolate City, Dvpper Music, Fortune Wind Digital Services, Premier Records, Sol Generation, Afrisauti VAS Ltd, Tamasha Records, Content Connect, Trioblaze, Cidar Africa, Slide Digital, and Swangz Avenue. This has built a rich, culturally relevant catalog that amplifies artists while driving monetization at scale.

Looking ahead, Mdundo is targeting the distribution of up to $1.2 million in royalties by 2026, supported by revenue projections of $1.7M–$2.2M. Growth will be fueled by expanded subscription services, stronger telco partnerships, and leveraging its Progressive Web App (PWA) to reach audiences globally.

With strategic expansion, industry collaborations, and an artist-first approach, Mdundo is shaping a more inclusive and profitable future for Africa’s music industry — and its partnership with WIMSA signals a renewed commitment to ensuring that women are at the forefront of this transformation.
