Made in Chocolate City: 20 Years of Redefining African Hip-Hop

Before the global stages, there was a lawyer in Jos with a vision and a bonus cheque. Everything you love about Nigerian hip-hop traces back to that room.

Chocolate City Music was founded in 2005 by lawyer Audu Maikori, alongside Paul Okeugo and Yahaya Maikori, built from a genuine belief that African artists deserved better representation. Audu understood what it meant to have something to say and no platform to say it on. He registered the label with his bonus earnings from a law firm. What started as a creative community in Jos became one of the most important record labels Africa has ever produced.

M.I Abaga arrived first. His debut album Talk About It in 2008 did something Nigerian hip-hop had never quite done before. It proved the genre could be both critically brilliant and commercially powerful at the same time. Ice Prince followed, blending hip-hop with Afropop in a way that made the mainstream impossible to ignore. His debut Everybody Loves Ice Prince gave the world Oleku featuring Brymo, one of the most remixed African songs in history. Jesse Jagz completed the picture, bringing a raw, genre-defying energy that made the Choc Boiz trio one of the most celebrated hip-hop crews the continent had ever seen.

What makes Chocolate City's story genuinely remarkable is how they kept building through every shift in the industry without losing their identity.

When M.I became the label's president in 2015, he created sub-labels that expanded the roster's reach, including 100 Crowns, which discovered and signed Blaqbonez. In 2019, Chocolate City signed a worldwide distribution deal with Warner Music Group, signalling that what started in Jos had become a global operation.

CKay arrived and changed the streaming game entirely. Love Nwantiti, released under Chocolate City, crossed 562 million streams on Spotify alone and became one of the biggest Afrobeats exports the world had ever seen. Blaqbonez kept the hip-hop legacy burning, winning Best Rap Album at the Headies, breaking streaming records with Chanel in 2026, and making Nigerian hip-hop relevant to a new generation. Young Jonn stepped out of the producer's chair and into his own era, Dada kicked off a run that cemented him as one of the most exciting names on the label's current roster. Candy Bleakz gave the label a commanding voice in street music. Tar1Q, Noon Dave, and Major AJ represent the next wave, and they are already delivering.

Twenty years in, and Chocolate City is not slowing down. The NXXT EP, their latest label-wide project, brings the full current roster together on six heavy tracks. Tonight with Blaqbonez, Major AJ, and Noon Dave is a feel-good Afro-fusion anthem that pulls the room together effortlessly. Go Crazy II is exactly what the title promises, unfiltered and high energy. 2Magaritas keeps the good time rolling with Blaqbonez and Noon Dave in full stride. Uloma gives Tar1Q, Major AJ, and Noon Dave room to shine. And Suddenly brings Candy Bleakz into the fold, her voice cutting through the production and reminding everyone why she belongs in every conversation about the label's current era. Six tracks making a statement: Chocolate City is still in the game.

Audu Maikori once said: "What we try to do is ensure that there's something that people can aspire to be." That sentence explains everything.

Chocolate City has been a home for artists who had something real to say and gave them the infrastructure to say it to the world. That is why the alumni list reads like a who's who of Nigerian music history. That is why a label that started with a lawyer's bonus earnings now has a worldwide Warner Music distribution deal, a $1 million fund for creative startups, and artists charting across six continents.
